That’s an easy question to answer. Rolfing solved my problems. I was in my early forties, and even though I watched my weight and exercised regularly, I was starting to feel very old. Every day, there were aches and pains, and constant headaches. I was always taking Advil for the pain.
I had good health insurance at the time, so I got tested for everything, yet they found nothing. One day, I came home from work early because I wasn’t feeling well. On the Oprah show, the actor LeVar Burton mentioned Rolfing. I searched through the phone book, found a Rolfer, and went to see the first one that would see me.
After the first treatment I thought, “Oh, this is different.” But I didn’t want to be too hopeful. By the third session, I was convinced that I had found something that was making a real difference. I wondered why more people didn’t know about Rolfing, why didn’t my MDs recommend this as an alternative, and why weren’t there more Rolfers?
At the time, I was uncertain of my future in the computer/software industry. I had been a UNIX based support person and I just didn’t want to get into the Microsoft/Windows applications. I was burned out from years of working for start-ups and just was not interested in working in the computer industry any longer.
I was fortunate to have the freedom to explore the idea of becoming a Rolfer. I went to Boulder for the first segment of the Rolfing training in 1996… I took my time and finally graduated in 1998 and completed my Advanced Certification in 2007.
Again, why am I a Rolfer? It’s the satisfaction of helping facilitate change in people. Rolfing (structural integration) is all about change. I’ve seen chronic pain go away and not come back. I’ve seen an extremely bashful, hunched-over man learn to stand up straight. I’ve seen personalities blossom. I’ve seen Rolfing heal people just like it healed me. That’s why I am grateful to be a Rolfer.
