Rolfing is a holistic system of soft tissue manipulation and movement education that organizes the whole body in gravity. It can ease stress and chronic pain by improving posture and bringing the body into better alignment. Chronic pain is usually due to an overcompensation created by some postural anomaly, so Rolfing looks at the whole body and frees up areas that are stuck and teaches the body how to wake up muscles that have forgotten how to do their job. By working with the connective tissue and nervous system the whole body is re-educated and can then function more efficiently.
Over a half century ago, Dr. Ida P. Rolf began developing a holistic system of therapeutic movement education and soft tissue manipulation that eventually came to be known as Structural Integration.
Dr. Rolf discovered that striking changes could be achieved in both posture and body structure by the manipulation of the myofascial system, the fibrous connective tissues that binds together the muscles, organs, and other soft structures of the human physique. This special kind of manipulation realigns the body structurally and harmonizes its fundamental movement patterns in relation to gravity. Once realigned and balanced, the body can heal itself.
Dr. Rolfs studies and consequent teachings of Structural Integration have become internationally recognized. Her work is now usually referred to as simply Rolfing by both its practitioners and the public.
There are now over a dozen schools teaching the “Ida P. Rolf Method” of structural integration.
